From performing in her father’s choir for Persian Gulf War troops when she was 4, to teaching herself to play guitar at age 16, Cheadle has spent her life surrounded by music. Now the young singer/songwriter is planning a national tour to promote her fourth album, Live On, which was released this year. Cheadle, who grew up in Pitman and now lives in Swedesboro, makes time for charity work, playing benefit concerts and performing for patients at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

LAURA CHEADLE, ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Laura Cheadle answers the phone with all the enthusiasm of a pizza delivery guy at midnight. That is to say she’s not trying to impress me because, to her, I'm nothing new. After all, Cheadle, a singer-songwriter who appears on Friday, November 20, at the Burlap & Bean Coffeehouse in Newtown Square, has been fielding autograph requests since age four. I quickly learn that she loves Stevie Wonder, drives a Chevy Malibu, and thinks Princeton might just be her favorite spot in New Jersey. Well, as long as she’s got a guitar in hand. She chatted with me from her Swedesboro, NJ, home.

U.S. 1: I think we can learn a lot about you as a musician by what songs you cover. What’s your go-to cover for a bar at last-call?

LC: Oh, man. “Son of a Preacher Man.” I don’t do many covers but I’ll throw them in there. I did it once at a show in Manayunk when everyone was drunk. We wound up with a hundred person dance party.

U.S. 1: And if you were going to open a set with a cover?

LC: “Chain of Fools.” I do a funk version of it. I also do a funk version of “Come Together” by the Beatles.

U.S. 1: How about a song you could never cover?

LC: Stevie Wonder comes to mind. I’m obsessed with him. I don’t know if anyone knows this song, but “You and I” by Stevie Wonder. I’d never cover that.

If these selections are a refreshing change from the celebrity-obsessed pop blips that dominate radio stations today, it’s no coincidence. At 23, Cheadle has racked up an impressive 21 years of experience as a musician. The self-proclaimed “funky soul” singer-songwriter grew up in Pitman, New Jersey, and has managed to keep herself busy playing, recording, and writing music since the moment she could pick up an instrument. Touring began at age four (more on that in a minute) and, with the exception of time off to sit in classrooms at Pitman High and later at Camden County Community College (where she earned her associate’s degree), she hasn’t stopped. “I’ve been touring around with my own songs since high school. I’ve gotten the best music education on tour.”

So who exactly sends their four-year-old out on a national tour? Well, no one; but you could hitch a ride if your dad happened to be promoting a song that required young voices. Cheadle had just finished learning to walk and talk when Desert Storm began. In an effort to honor American troops her father, Jim Cheadle, a professional musician who also owns and operates 9 South, a recording studio in Swedesboro, composed “In a Desert Land.” When the song began to gain popularity he packed up his twin sons, their fifth grade friends, and his young daughter and hit the road. He called the group “The Appreciation Choir” and they toured the country as the song hit radio stations nationwide. Father, daughter, and brothers also all appear in the video, which was put into rotation on VH1 and MTV. (I recommend a glimpse of the video on YouTube, if not for the timely sentiment, for the fantastic hairdos.)

Cheadle doesn’t remember much about those days other than having trouble signing the autographs requested of her. She does, however, remember the lifestyle: “We would move from hotel to hotel and I remember just loving it.”

I ask her, If you had to do something other than perform as a musician, what would it be? “Oh my God. I would love to do improv comedy! I’m a ridiculous person — I got class clown in high school. That’s just how I am. Man, SNL would be the coolest thing! Of course I picked another performing profession,” says Cheadle, who claims she supports herself by performing.

To be fair, performing is what Cheadle knows best. Before she could even be considered a teenager, the band “Sibling” was formed between, you guessed it, Cheadle and her twin brothers. Besides boasting what I happen to think might be the best ever name for a band, they also had the distinction of an 11-year-old drummer. “I was a big fan of the movie “That Thing You Do” so I wanted to learn to play drums. We actually got pretty popular in Pitman,” says Cheadle. “Then, when I was 16, I taught myself to play the guitar.”

She then began to write her own songs and ventured out as a solo artist. Her unique method of playing and her ear for uncommon melodies drew audiences night after night. When the novelty of selling out coffee houses wore off, she recruited her dad and brothers to form a full band. “A lot of bands I know have to rehearse all the time and we just know each other so well. We get how each other plays.” The family is also featured on her debut album, “Falling In,” which was released in 2006. This was quickly followed by two live albums (“Live On” is her newest release) as well as a Christmas offering.

It helps to have a father who is a musician and has a recording studio but the place of family in Cheadle’s life and music runs a bit deeper than convenience. Her father’s influence is especially evident in the theme of her newest work. (Her mom is an elementary school teacher at Walls school in Pitman.) “I just released a song called ‘Change (It’s Alright)’ about the world’s problems. It was inspired by Hurricane Katrina and the idea of all the people out in the world suffering. I’d like to make a difference with this song.” The song, which features rich, delicate vocals, can be heard on both myspace.com/lauracheadle and facebook.com/lauracheadle.

The television interviews viewable on her website (lauracheadle.com) give one a taste of the Laura Cheadle you might encounter at one of her shows; confident, relaxed, and passionate. Cheadle’s next show in the Princeton area is on Friday, November 20 for an all ages appearance at the Burlap & Bean in Newtown Square, but not for lack of trying to get closer, which leads to a discussion of favorite places.

U.S. 1: What’s your favorite place in the world?

LC: I’d have to say anywhere with my guitar. Oh, on a beach with my guitar. Any beach. I love the beach, and I hate cold weather.

U.S. 1: How about your favorite place in New Jersey?

LC: I have to say Princeton! It’s hilarious but it really is. I’m not trying to suck up to U.S. 1, I just really like the town. I played Alchemist & Barrister back in July and it was packed. I’ve been trying to get booked at Triumph for a while. I’ve played the Triumph in New Hope.

U.S.1: You should show up in person and try to get them to talk to you.

LC: I have.

U.S. 1: Well, I’ll publish this part of the conversation in the paper and we’ll see what happens.

LC: Thanks!

U.S.1: What kind of car do you drive?

LC: A 2001 Chevy Malibu.

U.S.1: And what stations are saved on the radio?

LC: 90.1, 88.5 WXPN, 93.7 ('cause they play me all the time) 105.3, and Oldies 98.

Pitman, New Jersey seems like an odd place for a funk, soul, and jazz revivalist to be born. This just happens to be the case for the extremely beautiful and equally talented Laura Cheadle. Her latest album “Live On” has been a two-year labour of love. Produced by and recorded at her Father’s (James Cheadle) studio “Live On” also enlists the help of her brothers Jimmy Lee and Nick as well as many other talented musicians. Laura feels like she’s grown a lot while she was making this album and drew on many experiences, and took time to reflect on life.

In an interview I had with her she said : “Constantly” is about being with someone who can not make up their mind about you and keeps you stringing along. I got so fed up with it and wrote that song. I’m actually really happy it happened though because I feel like “Constantly” turned out to be a great song about craving passion.” Almost all the songs on the album deal with some sort of personal subject matter. My favorite track off the album is the title track. The song is a true life Earworm. Its lyrics really speak to any generation and will have you singing “Life is crazy, live on, live on.”

Laura Cheadle makes singing seem easy. She’s teeming with the sort of soul that other artists can only dream of. And if her studio performance is any indication, she puts on an awesome live show.

Along with singing, Cheadle plays acoustic guitar, but don’t let that fool you into thinking she’s another mellow guitar-toting singer/songwriter. Her style is more soulful and funky, more jazz-influenced than pop. Her album, Live On, opens with “Constantly,” which is fun and catchy and a preview of what’s to come. The songs are mainly pretty upbeat and the lyrics are sweet. “In the AM” proclaims, “I never thought I’d be as happy as I am watching you sleep in the AM.” It is refreshing to hear some songs in which the protagonist gets the guy.

But don’t just listen to the lyrics. The songs are packed with great instrumental breaks and solos. Cheadle loves music and appreciates the tiny details that go into making a song more than just a melody and chords.

In case you have any doubt as to how Cheadle defines herself, she includes “Funk Is Dead.” She sings, “If funk is dead, then so am I.” And her voice shines, although she doesn’t show off. She just lets her voice be what it is, which is smooth and soulful.

She’s backed by incredibly talented musicians, as is showcased by the keyboard and guitar solos in “Funk Is Dead.” And she showcases her pianist in “Something Today.” A whimsical introduction is joined with Cheadle’s breathy voice, showcasing her sweet side.

The album is definitely worth listening to. This is what a girl with a guitar can do.

I have finally found the love of my life.

It all start
ed this Sunday when I went on a photo shoot with the fabulous photographer Matty Rock.

We started by taking pictures in Hoboken:

Since it was freezing, Matty Rock suggested that I pick up a hat. He is a fan of hats and I just shrugged him off saying, "Oh, I've never worn a hat"
How silly of me not to let the hat into my heart!

We walked over to a street vendor as Matt persuaded me to "just take a look". And then, it happened. It felt like an angel came down and the city stopped as I locked eyes with...the HAT. What a match maker Matt is.

Love at first sight some might say but I have a feeling this was destiny.
I even bargained down two dollars off this hat from the street vendor. If that's not fate I don't know what is!

And, of course, the man responsible for bringing me to my hat..Matt. He is rocking his hat as well.

The entire rest of the day I talked about the hat and was completely enthralled. My head was so warm too! How could I go for twenty two years without this hat?!

So there you have it. The Laura Cheadle story of true love. haha before you know it, there will be songs about my hat. ;)

Funky Fresh Jersey Girl

How to describe the music of Laura Cheadle? It's probably best understood as a rich stew—or, in the sweltering heat in which I am writing this, a summer salad—the recipe for which goes something like this: two cups of old-school soul; one and a half cups of acoustic singer/songwriter; one cup of classic pop; one tablespoon of rock 'n' roll; jazz and blues to taste. Best served funky.

The 21-year-old songstress grew up in a heavily musical family, which put her in a position to either love music or hate music. Fortunately, she took the former course: "Music is my life and is so natural and medicating to me," she explains. "I need it just the same as I need air to breathe. I can't imagine living without it and I am thrilled to have grown up in such a musical environment." Laura's comments on the making of her current studio album, Falling In, reveal that music is still largely a family affair for this Jersey girl: "The main musicians [on Falling In] are myself on rhythm guitar and vocals, my father James S. Cheadle on keyboards, my brother Jimmy Lee Cheadle on lead guitar, Dave Sikorski on bass, Bill Grillo on drums and Justin Hirsch on percussion. […] I wrote all of the music originally on my acoustic guitar so it was a blast making this album with a live band."

The songs on Falling In deal with the usual themes of love, lust, infatuation, and separation, but there is no mistaking this for a typical "been there, done that" affair by yet another pretty girl with a guitar. First off, there's Laura's smoky voice, which veers from a sultry, seductive whisper to an electrifying gospel-tinged shout. Then there's her songcraft, based on ringing, textured guitar chords with jazzy chromatics, often employing tempo changes and slightly unorthodox chord sequences. "I taught myself how to play the guitar at age 15 and I don't really have a conventional way of writing or playing," she says with some amusement. "I wrote all of these songs during different times of my life and just developed a style that felt like me." Indeed, that style carries over to her lyrics, which often contain stream-of-consciousness musings related in a strangely poetic manner. For example, "Perfect Design" offers pairings like "I take you in my lips, devourin' every inch/Your charm and your mind, your whole perfect design"—phrases so pure and delicate I hesitate to apply such a stark label as "sexually explicit" to them. "Midst Of Your Mystery" is even more hauntingly down-to-earth: "It was kinda scary when the car said check engine/You just smiled and reassured we'd be just fine […] Deep down I wish we woulda got stranded, just to spend another moment with you."

When combined with the musicianship of her band and her father's production, Laura's songs get transformed into intriguing sonic collages. "Bright and Beautiful" combines the funk of a vintage Stevie Wonder track with a summery breeziness reminiscent of Malo's "Suavecito." And that's only part of the story. Laura: "For 'Bright and Beautiful,' we kept my music how it was written on the guitar but randomly decided to put a 'jazz break' in the middle of the song. I LOVE how it turned out." The album's title track starts off like the greatest ballad that Dionne Warwick never recorded, only to jump into a hip-swaying dance groove along the lines of War on happy juice. "Midst Of Your Mystery" marries the ethereal atmosphere of Rachael Yamagata's gentler songs to the down-and-dirty sound of a bluesy bar band, while "Love Map" brings in a country flavor on its swinging choruses. According to Laura, "that was not intentional. My acoustic version of ["Love Map"] does not sound country at all. My brother Jimmy Lee enjoys country music and he was playing that guitar riff on the album."

Two of the selections on Falling In differ so notably from the rest of the album that they deserve special mention. The ominous, minor-keyed "Replaying" is a quietly dramatic pop opus whose sound exists out of place and time, and Laura told me that it strikes a special chord with her: "I wrote 'Replaying' a few years ago and it's about a love that I had to let go of. I enjoy how this song came out because the music matches my emotion at the time. It's one of my favorite tracks on my CD because I was actually crying during the vocal." Equally eerie is the acoustic "Surrounded," whose lyrics are atypically abstract: "Affection takes over my world/All is surrounded by a single girl. Will she wander to an escape?/Cluttered with worries, there's no steps to take." Naturally, Laura can account for the singularity of this particular tune: "I wrote 'Surrounded' after my album was finished and about to be released. I went back in the studio to lay it down just to have it. I then decided to make it a bonus track. Many of my songs are love songs, but I wrote 'Surrounded' completely about life. I woke up with it in my head and wrote it down. It's really about figuring out different parts of your life and trying not to worry about what happens next."

So that's Laura Cheadle as an in-studio recording artist. But Laura Cheadle is more than just an in-studio recording artist; she's a personality. For one thing, she is an eccentric free spirit. Friend her on MySpace and it'll be just a matter of time before she fills your message center with random bulletins informing you of her latest road trip or the last Tower of Power concert she attended. She even poses all sorts of—you guessed it—random questions to her fans and shares photos and drawings in her bulletins and blogs. It's clear that she believes strongly in being connected to her fans, which the internet allows her to do with some semblance of ease. However, it is in person that Laura gets to make the ultimate connection with her funky followers.

Whether you see Laura acoustically or with her live band (also featuring her dad and her bro), she is sure to get wrapped up in a world of her own, letting each song take her and propel her into a realm understandable only by those who truly feel the power of her music. In an acoustic setting, she lets the raw emotion of her songs do the talking. With a full band behind her, she takes control of the stage, shaking and swaying every inch of her dancer's form to every single beat of the music. Either way, she banters freely with the audience, displaying a natural charm and a quirky sense of humor—both hard to resist. And in that moment when she looks out into the crowd and sees you dancing or singing along to her music and she engages your eyes, lingers for a moment, and winks, it is far beyond a mere connection. It is a genuine spiritual exchange. Or at least that's my perspective as a fan. Happily, Laura's perspective as the artist is similar: "Live performances are my favorite! The rush from the crowd is incredible and you get to be so spontaneous with the arrangements of music and performance. I live to perform. Acoustic shows are a great intimate setting where you can tell the crowd where [and] when each song was written. Full band shows are amazing because I get to dance and really stretch out vocally. I also love having that musical connection with all of my bandmates where we don't have to say a single word during a performance, yet we know exactly what each other is thinking."

What's next on the horizon for this rising young star? "I finished my brand new song '10 Weeks of Immortality' and that is up on my MySpace page for a listen. I am working on a new album, which will probably be finished by next year or so. I have been writing like crazy and feel like I just keep growing and growing. I went away on vacation last week and wrote four more songs." She adds, smiling, "It's hard to say how each song will turn out because I am getting inspired more and more every single day."

In the meantime, Falling In is readily available in CD form and on iTunes, and Laura also has a fun(ky) live CD which you can order directly from her. At the time of this writing, there are also some highly entertaining videos on her MySpace profile ("The MySpace Funk" has to be seen to be believed). It is fortunate that Laura Cheadle's music can be accessed so easily in this high-tech digital world, for she is an artist who has it all: the looks, the moves, the charisma, and the TALENT to back it all up.

Or, to put it more simply: Laura Cheadle is bright and beautiful.

Laura Cheadle at The Baggott Inn

Three words that can sum this up:
Born To Perform!
Laura Cheadle just broke open the Baggott Inn!
It didn't matter that I was having this weird conversation with this odd Asian woman. The Baggott Inn is a great place and makes me want to be 20 again and live in the village! So I could just go to shows constantly.
The opening:
Unfortunately I almost went into the club next to the Baggott Inn. I was like, "The cover is suppose to be 5…Not 15. I'm hear to see Laura Cheadle."
Guy was like, "Laura who?" Well I knew then that I was going to wrong place.
The Entrance:
I walked in like a stud. Sashaying into the room like a fish between the reeds. I make my way to the back and am surprised to find a great….Little stage. It's the village, but I thought it was still small…..That would be so over exposed as the night went on. My sashay only broken by the fact that I don't do it well and seriously I wasn't there to sashay.
Fortunately…The first act: Kristen Cerelli was probably funnier than any comedian next door and her songs were captivating.
Laura Joy: So this shy young lady came on. The audience was not into her, but I was into her. She did look a bit like she just fell of the bus from Kansas (Update: I think it may actually be Arizona), but I was captivated by her. I have a way of focusing on someone and she was just incredible despite the audiences lukewarm response.
OK…Finally….Laura Cheadle:
I saw her come in and went over to say hi. I waited until the Asian woman made her introductions.
I walked up and introduced myself. Laura is a warm person, but loud confined spaces are not my strong suit so I ran for cover. Plus I must have been blushing like a school girl that just showed my knickers, because Laura is far more beautiful in full motion. I shook her hand….Oh wait no…I squished the poor womans hand. She had such so soft delicate fingers.
Laura Goes On!
Wow….Wow….Amazing. She just blew the doors off the joint. Her voice resonating off the wall of the Baggott Inn from a voice that just pulled you in like a crashing neutron star.
She started with "Lay me down" and just captivated the audience….Who were already screaming for Laura anyway. The Asian woman just sat unstirred…But I knew…Inside she was rocking!….Sorry…Funking!
I remember "Come Together" coming next. Which was awesome and had the whole joint singing along.
"Midst of your Mystery" came next and just brought the house down. It's bluesy/Funky beat just sent the place astir. Even the lights started to fade because of the heat the Laura was generating. It was at this moment that I imagined the Baggott Inn as this entire ampitheater with stadium seating. She would fill the place with her energy alone.
I must mention now. Laura's energy on stage must have raised the season in the joint from semi-winter to full on summer. There are some people like Jim Morrison and Ozzy that just bring such presence to the stage that no matter the venue…..They widen its expanse. Laura is one of these people.
There was a set they did just before the last that just touched on every musical genre imaginable that showed the breadth and depth of the Cheadle family band. It's like they said to each other outside…just before entering…..Lets blow the roof off this joint.
Finally and happily….I heard the drum beat start for Superstition by Steve Wonder. Superstition to me is like the baddest song ever created and Laura with her deep vocals brought justice to a song I find dear to my heart. Than to my Funking amazement…Another one bites the dust comes out of nowhere and than another amazing Stevie Wonder song….Living in the City. At that point the nice Asian lady had left in a hurry after a phone call and I was just blowing in the wind and found a superb spot to enjoy the powerful vocals coming from Laura.
I must also mention the band….Which was just Incredible. The Cheadle family band as I call them, are just amazing. Laura's Dad, James S. Cheadle is an amazing keyboardist that brings his own flavor to classics by Stevie Wonder as well as Laura's originals.
What more can be said about Jimmy Lee Cheadle. Laura's Brother…I believe. This guy is an incredible guitarist. Being a guitarist myself I just watched his style all night. His solo's were amazing. Only one complaint. I've never been taken by finger tapping, but it worked here. Also the solos were very high on the fret board. Not that I mind that at all. Just that the upper strings bring a nice fullness to solos as well. These aren't criticisms. Damn…I wish I could play like that! He is incredible!!!!
Paul Galonsky (on Drums) and Dil McDaniel (on 5 hundred string bass or something) just set an amazing backdrop for what was an incredible set.
My only wish…..10 hours of just listening to Laura and the band play their hearts out.
It was amazing. As a musician it is one of those sets that makes you thinks, "Hmmmm Maybe I should go back to the drawing board."
Than again…Each person has their own style and funk….And I think Laura bring the best out of everybody onstage and offstage.

As the new year begins, so begins another chapter in the life of Mr. Mace. Making preparations for the transition from Manhattan living to Sin City, I have decided to make the most of my remaining time here. Me being the music fanatic, I love attending concerts. Nothing like a live show.

New Year's started off with a bang as I caught a very energetic show by the talented soul sister Jill Scott at Madison Square Garden - who was the opening act for a hilarious Chris Rock. (that man is a fool for real). Much thanks to my man Rudy Calvo for the hook up on that one.

The New York area also has a lot of very talented lesser well-known artists and I have made a commitment to support, where able, shows that I had not had a chance to catch before. I started this past weekend with the ultra funky Laura Cheadle, a New Jersey native who now resides in PA, but makes regular stops in the NY area -- most recently at the Baggot Inn. Performing to a packed and enthusiastic crowd, this young (she's only 21!!) but mature soul/funk/rock siren shimmied and swayed to a live band while she crooned and caressed lyrics one would think someone much older would have written. I enjoyed her spirited covers as well as original material and congratulated her afterward on a great show. (not that she needed my validation, her audience was validation enough, lol.) Hi all!

Okay, I am very excited at the moment. My friend from TEXAS calls me on the phone and says "LAURA! I just picked up a magazine in a music store and YOU'RE IN IT"

I go, "pardon me?!"

I then go to my Barnes and Nobles and see that I am featured in the latest issue of "SKOPE MAGAZINE" which is available at every Barnes & Nobles (or stores like it) and music stores.

So, I'm with my mom and I find the magazine and then proceed to LEAP in the air and scream "AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM IN A MAGAZINE!!"

Customers are all around me wondering what is going on and my mom tells all of them. So, I had all of the customers reading it and saying congrats.

It was one of those "That Thing You Do Moments" (If you saw the movie, you know exactly what I'm talking about when they hear their song on the radio for the first time. If you haven't seen that movie, you should!)

I got stuck on a ride at Six Flags! (Pictures Included!)

Wow, so my worst nightmare came true today (well, at first)

I went to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ today and had quite the adventure.

Here is my story for all of you! I documented this experience with my trusty camera phone.

I arrived at Six Flags early and waited in line to go on the parachute ride (My favorite ride as a kid)....

After waiting in line for about 30 minutes, my best friend and I finally get on the ride. We went up up and up. Then, as we're coming down, we notice that we are stuck in mid air....

Can you imagine how frightened we were? If not, this is how scared we were...(PS: Notice the background and how high up we were!)

We notice that the woman running the ride gets flustered and goes for help. Ut oh! People in line start to get impatient that the ride is not resuming.

I start to get a little freaked out, afraid to look down so I look up. This is the parachute above me.

An hour passes and we are still stuck in mid air. The packed line waiting for this ride has now vanished since everyone learned that we are stuck.

Finally, we are let down from the ride. (Believe me, I thought we were going to shoot down and die at one point). We are then given "Exit Passes"for our trouble which is like Fast Pass, but better. The employees told us this was the least they could do for us being stuck for an hour! We got to go the exit instead of the entrance of a ride and get on the ride with no wait. This came in handy since there were two hour waits all day!

After a long day, my best friend and I stopped at this restaurant called "Chicken Holiday" I love them because they made me a vegetarian gyro which was DELICIOUS!

It looks like my nightmare turned out to be a dream come true in the end!

Hey all,

I am in the best mood today. I saw my favorite funk band of all time last night.. "TOWER OF POWER"

I see them every single time that they come near by. I am also the one in the audience that dances the entire time while others sit down. haha

Absolutely incredible. There are no words to desrcibe how amazing they are. ugh. haha

So, listen to this...

After the concert last night, I went to a diner and it was about midnight. There were these older women in their 70's playing a game in the diner.
They called it "Who can touch the ceiling game"
(Yeah, I swear, this really happened haha)

So anyway, they came up to our table (I had some friends with me and my dad) and challenged us to try to leap in the middle of the restaurant and try to touch the ceiling.

Before we knew it, we had a whole competition going on. Even the waitresses got involved!

I lost the challenge :( The older woman beat me though! They sure know how to stay young :)

It was definitely one of those random, sort of twilight-zone evenings. As I type it, I don't even believe it happened.

Moral of the story? You never know what you're going to see after you see the funk! haha

I had to share this with you because it was hilarious. I wish I got pictures!

You're probably not going to believe me, but I have a witness.

While I was making cupcakes for my birthday bash, the PA lottery numbers were being called. As I was baking, I said called out FOUR of the numbers a second before they were called and they were right. My mom FLIPPED OUT. I really think I'm psychic haha. Too bad I didn't buy a lottery ticket.

And this made me think. How many of us are in tune with our "sixth sense"

Well hello all!
I am so very excited that I am on the cover of The South Jersey Weekender once again! (I was on the cover in March of 2005)

The man behind the counter goes, "Wow, five copies huh?" I showed him that I was on the cover and he was shocked. I was definitely in my pajamas when I walked in. haha

So, I look over at my mom and she looks like she is in deep thought. She was holding her old school cell phone in her hand (YOU KNOW, one of the original ones when they first came out) and she says to me (after I take a picture of my dad) "So.. if I call your father on MY phone, will his picture come up?""No mom.. Only on MY phone."
Me and my dad just stared at her for a few minutes and bust out laughing.

Hola! Are you ready for a RIDICULOUS story?
So, picture this: My gorgeous mommy and I walk in at the Shop Rite supermarket to drop off my film from Chicago (By the way, the pictures turned out AMAZING and I wish I had a scanner)
I had two disposable cameras. I took one and my mom took the other. I filled out the little thing on the film envelope, dropped my camera in and I was done.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch (ha), my mom proceeds to drop her PHONE into the film envelope instead of the camera. After she dropped it in, she realized her ridiculous mistake since she had the camera in her hand and no phone.
I kid you not, I was ON THE FLOOR laughing hysterically and couldn't even breathe. One of those REAL GOOD belly laughs you used to have as a kid on a hot summer day in the pool. (maybe just me? ha)
We had to go through this huge ordeal to get the phone back and they even said on the supermarket mic, "MANAGER! We have an issue"
Funniest thing I have ever witnessed so I thought I would share it with you.

I have been watching one too many romantic comedies lately and it sparked something within me.

Snapper turtle soup?!

Hello my loving turtles,
Okay, so, I officially had a blonde moment. (Not saying blondes aren't smart of course. Figure of speech, people!)
I was sitting at a diner today and I go, "What's in snapper soup?" To my surprise, SNAPPER TURTLES. Yes, I know you are all aware of that, but I, Laura Ann, had not the slightest idea. I got laughed at for about 20 minutes. HA HA HA. Of course I didn't eat the soup being the vegetarian I am. Besides, turtle soup? eeek.
I am officially random. I decided to go to Chicago next week out of nowhere. You may actually see me showing up at some open mics for fun. I have never been there and am dying to check it out. If you're from Chicago, don't be shy in telling me about some hot spots there.
This brings me to my question of the day...

Squirrel tails and running through sprinklers

Hey lovies, Wow, what a hot day! It's about 95 degrees out today in good ole' New Jersey. Ready for my random story of the day? Of course you are... So, this morning, I woke up to the sound of my cell phone (A Jamiroquai ringtone.. so it was quite loud and funky). My best friend Norah from childhood calls me and says, "You're coming over today. Bring a bathing suit." Being the random and spontaneous girl that I am, I put on my bikini and hit the road. She takes me to this random swim club that was a summer camp. It was GORGEOUS. Every child's dream.

Here we are, in bikinis and towels in hand looking at the wave pools, lake, and all that fun stuff. We go to the office and they say to us, "Sorry we're closed today." Picture two little kids frowning because they were so close to that ice cream cone and it just simply melted on them. Yeah, it was that heartbreaking.

Haha. Anywhoo, so we made sure not to let that ruin our day. We went to her back yard and turned on the sprinkler! (Ps I SO used to own a Power Rangers sprinkler. Yeah, I know) Picture this: Me in my bright neon bikini jumping through the sprinkler for hours. I need to get my hands on a slip and slide though. That is my next adventure. But yeah, as we are playing in the sprinkler... we see a SQUIRREL's tail just sitting there. No squirrel. Just a tail. We ran screaming. Oh, if only you were there to see. Good times with norah :)

This brings me to my question of the day...

Moving on... Saturday night's show at the Tin Angel was AMAZING! Thank you all SO MUCH for coming out and supporting me! I loved the vibe I got! The sound was amazing too. Hey loves! How are we on this beautiful day? (Well, it's gorgeous here in New Jersey) Don't you all wish you were a kid again? I know that I'm a kid at heart. This weather totally makes me want to eat ice cream. Ready for this funny story? Last night, I was at Dairy Queen with my friend and there was no where to sit inside, so we decided to take our ice cream to the car. The car was facing the window and there were three little girls sitting inside. One of the little girls (who looked very girly in her summer dress and bow) knocked on the window to get our attention. She couldn't have been older than 5. We looked up and she stuck out her tongue in a cute little girl way. Being the "responsible and mature" adults that we are, we could NOT be upstaged. I stuck out my tongue with ice cream all over it and made a funny face. The little girl started cracking up, as did we and then made a face back. I got my friend involved and she got her two friends involved. This went on for about 15 minutes (yeah I know) and BOTH parties were DYING of laughter.

It's the little things in life that keep ya going lol

Ready for my ROCKSTAR moment of the day? (so excited!) I walked into Wendy's not even an hour ago with my dad and this girl comes running up to me and goes, "Are you Laura Cheadle?" I go, "OMG, is she here?" She looked at me dumbfounded and we both cracked up. It makes me smile because I am just this girl next door goofball who just loves to write music and sing. I would hang out with every one of you. It always takes me by surprise. By the way, my mailbox was FILLED with emails regarding my previous question of the day, "What's the biggest change you've ever gone through?" I love your answers. It's crazy because so many people are afraid to say hi on the street. I like to freak people out and go, 'HI!" as I'm walking by them. You always seem to get mixed reactions, but when did this all change? When did we become so aloof? Not saying EVERYONE is like this, of course. I know I'm just friendly by nature.

Out of my element

Hello loves, So I have been getting many emails today asking about my house of blues performance.

Okay, so, first off, last night was a blast rocking the stage at the HOUSE OF BLUES BABY! I was the only girl in the entire competition. The other bands, however, were night and day compared to my music. They were all either emo, modern rock or punk rock. I AM NOT IN ANY WAY SAYING ANYTHING BAD ABOUT THEM OR THESE GENRES. What I am saying is that my music was just such a far stretch from their music. For example, if an emo band were to come to an all funk and soul competition, they would seem out of place. Needless to say, I did not win the competition. Although, I did make many new fans and talked to them at my little merch stand. I don't regret being in this competition at all because I really did one hell of a performance and jumped around the stage.

Thank you all you myspacers who came to meet me last night! The show will actually be aired on NBC 40 after saturday night live in 2 weeks. I'll let you know more details on that. If you live around jersey, you may also see me in the paper. I'll tell ya, the photographers were taking many pics of me last night. I'm sure I'll show up somewhere. haha I'm just DYING for there to be a competition in my genre of music. Like a singer/songwriter, funk, soul, blues competition? So I saw the amazing TOWER OF POWER on friday night. The vocalist, larry braggs is INCREDIBLE. I'm speechless. I love his energy on stage and I think last night I was doing close to what he was doing haha How was everyone's weekend? Wow...
This past Sunday couldn't have been more amazing. World Cafe Live was definitely a great choice to have our CD Release.
We started the show off with some jazz by my dad and the band.
I then came up and did an acoustic set, which many of you love and are used to from my first acoustic cd.
After that, we got groovin with the band! I was really really feeling the crowd and loving every minute of it. I feel like this was honestly our best performance EVER.
The band was my daddy on the keys, my brother on electric guitar, diggin dave on bass, justin on congas, and bill on the drums.
We're tighter than ever and so happy the CD is released.

Well, wow, here it is...
This is all our hard work paid off. It's crazy that it's done. I really hope you can all make this event. The CD absolutely sounds incredible. For those of you who have my acoustic cd, there's many of the same songs but way fuller and grown up. Back then, I was all raw emotion. Now, I'm more mature musically but filled with emotion.

The florida sun made me fun.

Oh, the Florida sun.I just returned from Florida after doing a few shows thurr.So pretty. I randomly walked in a few places with just me and the geetar. So many people responded and were awesome. Maybe they're just so damn happy because of the weather. It was between 75 and 80 there and I danced with delight.I was so excited to see a SONIC drive thru place. They tease us here in Jersey with their tantalizing commercials. I was there in the flesh slurping up a morning sunshine smoothie. Maybe I made that name up but it reminded me of the sunshine after the rain. Wow, 98 degrees.Even after my blog, people still thought it was my birthday and left me messages. I bet you're all going to forget about little ole me on February 20th, my ACTUAL birthday. I'm turning 20, so not fun.BUT ya know what? My band will be touring Tokyo, Japan in august of 2006. all the tofu i can eaat!Yeah, def. ate at pf changs last night in jacksonville and got so sick. I'm not down with the spice. Come see my ice, it's so nice. Watch out for the mice. Stop me.So yeah, many shows coming up. hey ya'll,
Just thought I'd update about the CD progress. Again, I want to thank you all for the emails and support. Last night, we pretty much finished, "Lay Me Down" which is insanely funky and I'm so excited about it. I'm actually going into the studio in an hour to do some more vocals. We even have a surprise song we're putting on. I'm putting all my time and energy into this and decided to not rush it just to get it done.

The release party will most likely be in January, so you can all be free to attend after the holidays.

I actually just wrote a song that I'm thinking of putting on the CD as an acoustic.

There is news of a tour that we wil be doing but I won't jump the gun just yet and say where it is until it's all worked out!

Anyway, I'll continue to work my booty off to finish this.

hey everyone,
Our CD is "seeing the light at the end of the tunnel" We didn't want to just rush it to get it done, so we're making sure we have every song exactly how we want it. It's only a matter of weeks now, though!

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, the 18th we have a big show at World Cafe Live. It's absolutely gorgeous in there. Great place to eat, drink, relax and breathe in music. I hope you guys can make it because it's going to be amazing.

We go on at 8, so come early.

Yeah, so last night was incredibly fun. We played, "The Fire" in Philadelphia. The stage set up was really cool and I went crazy on stage. All that attended will agree. Haha We're playing there again soon on a weekend, so come on out!

My amazingly talented web designer took these pics last night at the show. I hope she posts them on lauracheadle.com, but for now I'll post some on here.

I have an acoustic show tomorrow night in Glassboro, NJ which should be cool. It'll be different from me running around the stage and dancing to funk like last night.

My new CD, "Falling In" should be released in a month. We are working hard to make it sound exactly how we want it. Each song has a different vibe to it and it's turning out amazing. My band has truly made my songs come to life. If you haven't yet, come out to a show! Our recordings do not give our live performances any justice!
